Red and blue heelers found 'beaten and dumped' on popular walkway

The red cattle dog was found in the bushes with severe injuries, near the body of a deceased blue cattle dog with similar injuries.

An investigation is underway after two dogs were found "beaten and dumped" on a popular Central Queensland walking track.

WARNING: This story contains images and details that some readers may find distressing.

Emerald resident Lani Miller was walking her dogs at Selma Weir on Sunday afternoon when she found a blue cattle dog dead and a red cattle dog injured in bushes nearby.

"It couldn't move — we tried to coax it out, but it was very injured," she said.

"It was very scared."

Ms Miller said two other walkers helped to get the red cattle dog into their ute and called a vet for help.

"Unfortunately her injuries, which were a broken neck and back, were too severe for her to be saved," Ms Miller said.

'Similar injuries'

Ms Miller said it appeared the dogs had been "beaten and dumped".

"They both had similar injuries," she said.

"They both had broken backs … one had facial injuries and one had a broken neck.

"To me it just doesn't seem like they both were hit by a car and had the same injuries.

"We went back later to grab the blue one and … blood just started pouring out of his mouth because he had a very severe head injury.

"I was absolutely devastated — as a dog lover myself I have two rescues, and to see two dogs in such a state like that was absolutely heartbreaking."

Queensland Police and Biosecurity Queensland said they were investigating.

Ms Miller said she hopes justice is served for the animals.

"You can't do this to a poor innocent animal," she said.

"It's just disgusting."
