‘Red alert’ for holiday hotspot as volcano erupts

  • Sunddhnúksgígar, a volcano south of Reykjavik, Iceland, erupted on Tuesday, prompting evacuations of nearby areas including the popular Blue Lagoon resort.
  • This is the 11th volcanic eruption in the region since 2021.
  • A red alert has been issued, though air traffic remains unaffected.
  • Around 40 homes were evacuated in the fishing town of Grindavik.
