Red alert at Glasgow Airport after Iceland-bound flight declares mid-air emergency

An unscheduled landing has taken place at Glasgow Airport after a Reykjavik-bound cargo flight declared a mid-air emergency.

The Bluebird Nordic flight was on route to the Icelandic capital this morning (January 3) from Billund in Denmark when it issued a Squak 7700 Emergency as it flew near to the Faroe Islands - around 200 miles to the north of the Scottish mainland.

The plane appears to have entered into a controlled descent and turned towards Scotland, descending to a height of 8,000 feet - suggesting that the emergency may be related to cabin pressure.

Various planetracking accounts on Twitter picked up on the emergency and followed the plane's forced change of flight path via FlightRadar24 down through Scotland and towards the central belt.

The plane then turned towards Glasgow before landing at Glasgow Airport at 8:55am, around 40 minutes after the pilot first declared a mid-air emergency while the plane was over 400 miles away near to the Faroe Islands.

A spokesperson for Glasgow Airport said: “We can confirm that a Bluebird Cargo aircraft landed at the airport this morning. It requested to divert to Glasgow due to a technical issue.”
