Recycling firm helps major health and wellness retailer hit waste goal

A recycling firm has helped a major health and wellness retailer hit a key environmental target.

A year ago, Burton-based Willshee’s Waste & Recycling started working with Holland & Barrett, which has hundreds of shops across the country, to help the retailer reduce the amount of waste it produced being sent to landfill.

Before the two companies started working together, around 25% of the waste generated by Holland & Barrett’s estate was sent to landfill.

Simon Birtles and Mark Cosford, from Holland & Barrett’s environmental health and safety team, led the overhaul of the retailer’s waste management and recycling processes.

Today, every day stock is delivered to stores and at the same time all their waste is collected and brought back to Wilshee’s Burton for sorting and processing.

Any residual waste is reprocessed into Refuse Derived Fuel, which is then used by “waste to energy” power plants.

Mark said: “Not only are we now achieving zero waste to landfill, but we are far more environmentally friendly than we used to be.

“While working with Willshee’s has delivered impressive environmental and financial benefits, there are many other advantages too.

“Their standards in terms of compliance are exemplary. I can totally rely on the team there to be proactive around legislative changes as they come on stream, and the Willshee’s solution is fully traceable and auditable with reporting that allows us to closely monitor performance.”

Willshee’s managing director, Dean Willshee, said: “Our work with Holland & Barrett is a fantastic example of best practice.

“We are really proud of what we have achieved together and are looking forward to further developing our relationship.”
