Recycling centre forced to close after staff member tests positive for coronavirus

A North Somerset recycling centre - forced to close after a member of staff tested positive for covid - has re-opened.

Backwell Recycling Centre was forced to shut on Monday (January 11) after a member of the team tested positive for the virus.

Members of staff in close contact with the individual have now been told to self isolate.

The recycling centre underwent a ‘deep clean’ and re-opened for essential visits yesterday (Tuesday).

Additional staff from other areas have been drafted in to get the site operational once again.

The site will be closed today (Wednesday) and tomorrow as normal and re-open again from Friday.

A council spokesman said: “One member of staff has tested positive at Backwell Recycling Centre.

“Others he’s worked with are self isolating.

“A deep clean was carried out as per government guidance and the site re-opened yesterday."

People are still being urged to only visit the recycling centres if essential.

The spokesman added: “We are still seeing large numbers of visitors to our recycling centres.

“People should only visit if it is essential and you cannot safely store waste or recycling at home.

“Those sorting through their garage or having a post Christmas clear out should consider postponing taking waste to a recycling centre till after the lockdown, as this is not considered an essential activity.”

The council also has recycling centres in Portishead and Weston-super-Mare.

The Weston site opens seven days a week and Portishead is closed on Tuesdays.
