Recycling boxes stuffed full of used tissues still being left out for collection during coronavirus outbreak

Disgusting recycling boxes stuffed full of used tissues are continuing to be left out for waste crews during the coronavirus outbreak.

North Somerset Council issued a plea earlier this month urging residents not to leave personal waste – such as used tissues – in the recycling boxes due to the risk of infection during the pandemic.

But it seems as if some people are continuing to ignore the advice, with this recycling box full of used tissues left out for collection this week.

The box, due to infection risk, was left uncollected.

The council took the step of publishing pictures of the recycling box on its social media channels as a reminder to people to deal with their waste responsibly.

A council spokesman said: “Increased volumes of recycling are being put out and residents are being urged to help the crews cope by correctly sorting their recycling boxes.

“This is an example of what a crew faced, with a jumbled box containing tissues.

“This rightly causes crews, who are working extremely hard in challenging conditions, concerns.

"This box was not collected.”

The discovery of the box comes at the same time as crews are battling to keep up to date with collections.

The authority has seen an increase in the levels of waste for collection as people stay at home under the Government guidelines.

Homeowners are being urged to separate waste such as used tissues and cleaning cloths, and double bag it.

They are also being asked to leave it for 72 hours before placing it in the black bin rubbish.

The spokesman added; “Recycling and refuse collections are continuing as normal at the moment.

“All recycling and waste crews have been out with additional support from council contractor Glendale who are collecting cardboard.”

Despite crews working hard, there has been some disruption to services.

Green waste collections were not carried out as normal in parts of Portishead this week with people be asked to take the bins back in and put them out again on the next scheduled garden collection day.

Residents are also being asked to park sensibly to allow the crews to access kerbside waste.

The council’s three recycling centres at Backwell, Portishead and Weston-super-Mare are closed until further notice.
