NEW DELHI: As young batting sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal powered to his maiden international century against West Indies on the second day of the first Test in Dominica, the stylish left-hander achieved historic feats. Demonstrating remarkable grit and determination, Jaiswal finished the day on an unbeaten 143 to put India in control.
The Jaiswal ton put him in a rare list of Indian openers, who scored a hundred on in their debut Test matches.
The 21-year-old has now joined Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw, who previously scored a century in their maiden Tests as openers.
While Dhawan fired 187 against Australia in his first Test Mohali in 2013, Shaw scored 134 versus West Indies in Rajkot in 2018.
Yashasvi also became the third Indian batsman to score a hundred on debut against West Indies. Rohit Sharma (177 - Kolkata, 2013) and Shaw are the other two batsmen to achieve the feat.
Yashasvi is now the seventh Indian batsman to register a Test century on debut in an away match, a first in 13 years. The last Indian to achieve the landmark outside of India was Suresh Raina, who scored a 120 against Sri Lanka in 2010.
The left-hander also became the 17th Indian Test debutant to score a hundred. The most recent player to accomplish this feat was Shreyas Iyer, who achieved it in 2021 against New Zealand in Kanpur.

# Jaiswal is just the first Indian player to register a hundred on debut vs West Indies in the Caribbean and the seventh Indian to do so on debut in an overseas Test, joining Abbas Ali Baig (112 vs England at Manchester in 1959), Surinder Amarnath (124 vs New Zealand at Auckland in 1976), Pravin Amre (103 vs South Africa at Durban in 1992); Sourav Ganguly (131 vs England at Lord's in 1996); Virender Sehwag (105 vs South Africa at Bloemfontein in 2001 and Suresh Raina (120 vs Sri Lanka at Colombo, SSC in 2010).
# Jaiswal is now the first Indian opener to achieve the distinction of recording a hundred on Test debut in an overseas Test and the third overall for India - the first two being Shikhar Dhawan (187 off 174 balls vs Australia at Mohali in 2013) and Prithvi Shaw (134 off 154 balls vs West Indies at Rajkot in 2018).
# Another first for Yashasvi. He is now the first left-handed batter from any country to post a hundred on Test debut vs West Indies in the Caribbean, outstripping Zimbabwe's Sean Williams' 31 at Roseau in March 2013.
