Record year for north west Law firm Bermans as turnover increases 15 per cent

A north west law firm has reported record financial results for the fifth consecutive year, with a turnover increase of 15 per cent.

Specialist commercial lawyers Bermans, which has offices in Manchester and Liverpool, saw its turnover increase from £5.95m to £6.85m for the financial year ending June 30.

The firm said it has grown in all practice areas, including the transactional departments of property, corporate and invoice and asset finance, which continued to perform strongly despite economic uncertainty.

Fergal O’Cleirigh, partner and head of property, said: “2020 will mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the business in Liverpool by Keith Berman and we look forward with confidence to marking that with another successful year.”

The strong financial results come after a slew of promotions and appointments at the firm, including the promotion of its property team’s Claire Morris to partner.

Mr O’Cleirigh said: “Claire joined Bermans in 2006 as a trainee.

“She is an excellent lawyer and has a great reputation in the north west property industry.

“It is important that we grow the business so that opportunities for career progression are there for lawyers like Claire who join the firm at an early stage in their careers, we will also continue to look to recruit lateral hires who share our values and ethos.”

An increase in the employment department’s activity since the abolition of tribunal fees in 2017 has resulted in the appointment of Robert Maddocks, who will head up the team in Manchester this month.

Robert Eakins is also set to join the commercial team in Liverpool to work alongside head of department Chris McDonough, while Richard Moose and Claire McDonnell have been appointed to the litigation team.

Bermans solicitor and former Premier League footballer has this week been appointed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport as an arbitrator.
