Record surge in Covid deaths as Bristol case rate falls

Ten further coronavirus deaths have been confirmed in South Gloucestershire today (December 2) - the highest jump since the pandemic first hit.

According to the latest Government data, a total of 193 Covid fatalities have now been recorded in this district where the virus was mentioned on the death certificate. This total was last updated on November 20.

Today's rise in deaths is the largest in South Gloucestershire since April 5, when five fatalities were recorded.

Bristol reported three more deaths today, taking the total in our city to 293 where Covid was on the death certificate.

Bath and North East Somerset and North Somerset each confirmed two further deaths today.

Rates

Bristol's Covid rate per 100,000 people has been falling this week and now stands at 185.4. This is only slightly above England's 157.6 but still significantly higher than the South West's 95.6.

Crucially, it places us as 105th in the country - a significant drop from 50th, which was recorded at the weekend.

Our city recorded the biggest jump of 80, while South Gloucestershire reported a further 51.
