Record Store Day 2019 UK: The Mighty Boosh reunite as they’re named ambassadors

The Mighty Boosh are set to reunite for the first time in five years after being named UK ambassadors for this year’s annual Record Store Day.

Comedy duo Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt will follow in the footsteps of musical legends Sir Elton John and Dave Grohl with the role of celebrating independent record shops around the country.

The pair have vowed to help the nation “slow down and get physical” and go on a “magical journey” with vinyl in the digital era.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1, Great British Bake Off host Fielding said: “People that work in record shops are often obsessed with vinyl, music and bands and can steer you in the right direction and tell you about things that you would never know about.

Taking the reins: Fielding and Barratt will follow in the footsteps of legendary musicians (Joseph Lynn)

“Whereas you can’t do that on the Internet. It’s not possible. You want some vinyl expert to tell you about a record you’ve never heard of. That’s the beauty of it.”

Barratt said the bar has been set “at a new height” taking on the role from the previous musicians.

As part of the event the duo are giving supporters the opportunity to bag the complete Mighty Boosh radio series on vinyl for the first time.

Opening up on the decision to release their work now, Barratt said: “We are approaching singularity, when computers will overtake and replace us.

“Therefore, it suddenly felt prescient to outwit them and somehow save our precious early recordings onto a format that the dawning artificial intelligences will not see as a threat.”

Record Store Day will celebrate its 12th year on Saturday and has been credited with helping to boost the resurgence in vinyl sales, which hit 4.4 million units in the UK in 2018 alone.

Record Store Day 2019 will take place on Saturday, April 13
