It’s that time of year again. On Saturday 18 April, independent music shops around the UK (and the world) will open their doors early for another hectic Record Store Day – that annual tribute to the independent record shop that sees eager fans snapping up limited-edition singles, albums and box sets.
Vinyl obsessives will no doubt have jotted down a Record Store Day wishlist. Some may have even ranked purchases according to their willingness to resort to elbow-jabbing violence to get the goods. Once the preparation is done, everyone uses their own methods for nabbing the music they’re after, be that camping outside the shop the night before, swanning in for the late-afternoon slump and hoping for the best, or, God forbid, waiting for the eBay resellers online.

With that in mind, we want to know which releases you’re hoping to head home with this weekend. Metallica devotees might be excited about the unorthodox cassette reissue of the band’s 1982 demo tape – shh, don’t tell Cassette Store Day’s organisers – while Flaming Lips fans will be able to pick up three early singles made available on coloured vinyl for the first time. Luther Vandross, Iggy Pop, the Who, Little Dragon, Jay Z and Ghostface Killah, Vampire Weekend and the Charlatans are just a few of the hundreds of artists releasing music on the day.
For novelty value, there’s also Father John Misty’s I Love You, Honeybear single on heart-shaped, red 7-inch vinyl, or LA singer-songwriter Hanni El Khatib’s tasty-looking picture-disc pressing of D’Angelo cover Devil’s Pie. Collectors in the US will be able to buy J Dilla’s 2001 take on NWA’s Fuck the Police, designed to look like a policeman’s badge, but those in the UK will have to make do with ordinary-looking copies of his 2006 single Love. We will, however, be able to get our hands on colourful picture-disc copies of the classic Sex Pistols album Never Mind the Bollocks, mastered from its original tapes.
