A weekend spring storm that swept through Northern California brought heavy rain to the San Francisco Bay area and record-breaking snowfall to the Sierra Nevada region. The storm, which began on Saturday and continued into Sunday, left behind treacherous driving conditions and forced the closure of several mountain highways.

The University of California, Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab reported that Sunday's snowfall of 26.4 inches set a new single-day record for the 2023/2024 season, surpassing the previous record set on March 3rd. The unexpected snowfall in May surprised many, prompting the lab to humorously question if anyone had predicted such a wintry event on their 'winter bingo card.'

In addition to the heavy snowfall, parts of the Bay Area experienced significant rainfall, with up to an inch reported in some areas. Flood advisories were issued as temperatures dropped into the low 40s, accompanied by strong wind gusts reaching 40 mph near San Francisco.

The storm also impacted Southern California, bringing light rain and gusty winds to the region. Despite the disruptive weather over the weekend, forecasters predict drier and warmer conditions for the upcoming week as the storm system moves out of the state.
