Record rise in coronavirus deaths as new mutation confirmed in Bristol

Eleven further people have died in Bath and North East Somerset after contracting coronavirus - the highest daily rise since the pandemic first hit.

Across Bristol and its neighbouring areas, 22 more deaths were recorded on February 2.

The figures come on the same day that a mutation of the UK variant have been found in Bristol - which Matt Hancock described as "concerning".

Enhanced "contact tracing and control measures" are now set to be rolled out across the city.

Four further deaths were confirmed in Bristol, and 105 new Covid cases.

South Gloucestershire reported five more deaths, and 69 positive lab tests.

Two more people died in North Somerset, where 28 new cases were confirmed.

The breakdown of new cases

The daily rise in cases for each part of the region is recorded below, with the total figure during the pandemic in brackets:

  • Bath and North East Somerset: +42 (7,477)

  • Bristol: +197 (27,095)

  • North Somerset: +37 (8,898)

  • South Gloucestershire: +89 (13,199)

Government data up to February 1 shows that of the 10,143,511 jabs given in the UK so far, 9,646,715 were first doses – a rise of 350,348 on the previous day’s figures.

Some 496,796 were second doses, an increase of 2,587 on figures released the previous day.

The seven-day rolling average of first doses given in the UK is now 399,055.

Based on the latest figures, an average of 411,791 first doses of vaccine would be needed each day in order to meet the Government’s target of 15 million first doses by February 15.
