A record 538 executives at listed firms earned at least 100 million yen (889,800 dollars) for the fiscal year ending March 2018, or 72 more than the previous year, according to a survey by Tokyo Shoko Research, Ltd.
The figure is the largest since the fiscal year ending March 2010, when listed companies were first required to disclose executive compensation.
The credit research agency said the figures "reflect the positive performances of companies, including announcements of record-high profits."
The survey covered 2,421 listed firms that released securities reports by July 3 for the fiscal year ending March 2018.
The number of companies with at least one executive earning 100 million yen or more annually rose by 17 to 240. Twenty-two executives at Mitsubishi Electric Corp. earned at least 100 million yen, more than any other surveyed company.
The highest-paid executive was Sony Corp. Chairman Kazuo Hirai, a former president of the company who received 2.713 billion yen. The sum marked a three-fold increase from his total remuneration the previous year.
