Record high in Bristol's coronavirus deaths as UK fatalities surpass 100,000

Bristol recorded its joint-highest number of coronavirus fatalities in one day as the UK's death toll has now surpassed 100,000.

Ten further people have died after contracting the virus in Bristol, the latest Government breakdown of statistics reveals today (January 26).

This is the fourth time in January a record total has been recorded.

Before this month, the highest total was in April, when seven Covid deaths were confirmed in one day.

The figures come on the same day that the number of deaths within 28 days of the person testing positive for the virus peaked at 100,162. During the first wave, experts said our county would be doing well if we lost 20,000 people in the pandemic.

Speaking at a Downing Street press conference today, England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty warned that “the number of people dying per day will come down relatively slowly over the next two weeks”.

Cases

A further 173 people tested positive for the virus in Bristol over the past 24 hours.

Our city's rate per 100,000 people fell to 347.7 on Tuesday, this compares to 510 only a few weeks ago.

South Gloucestershire confirmed the second-highest jump today, with 133 new cases. This district's rate stands at 314.3.

Both North Somerset and Bath and North East Somerset's infections have been dropping significantly over the past few weeks, with 53 and 54 new cases reported respectively today.

The breakdown of new cases

The daily rise in cases for each part of the region is recorded below, with the total figure during the pandemic in brackets:

  • Bath and North East Somerset: +54 (7,158)

  • Bristol: +173 (26,002)

  • North Somerset: +53 (8,560)

  • South Gloucestershire: +133 (12,676)
