Record crowd of 40,000 on the cards at Aviva Stadium for FAI Cup final

A record crowd of 40,000 is on the cards at Aviva Stadium for today’s FAI Cup final between Bohemians and St Pats - which you can follow live here.

That would smash the previous best of 36,101 for a cup decider at the Dublin 4 venue back in 2010 when Sligo Rovers beat Shamrock Rovers on penalties.

The all-time record attendance for an FAI Cup final is 41,238 at Dalymount Park for the 1945 showdown between Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers.

"If you can’t get excited about playing in front of a big crowd in a good stadium and on a good pitch there's something wrong with you,” said Bohs boss Keith Long.

And St Pat’s gaffer Stephen O’Donnell said: “It’s the first time a lot of our boys will have played in front of such a crowd and it's about being able to handle that.

“But lads can break through ceilings that they didn't know they had and that’s what adrenalin does for you.

“It's an enjoyable day out on a beautiful pitch, a great arena, in front of lots of fans and something you dream about as a kid.

“They will feel like proper footballers and it's about taking all that in and enjoying it. I like to think the mentality of our boys means they will thrive off the atmosphere.”

O’Donnell is desperate to win a trophy and added: “The FAI Cup final is something we spoke about at the start of the season.

“We’ve done the heavy lifting getting here and finished second in the league, so they have earned the right to go and enjoy it.”

But opposite number Long also has eyes on the prize despite being banned from the dugout today.

The Gypsies boss said: “We have to produce a performance that can help us reward the fans who have supported the club through thick and thin.

"We've fought back from a difficult period where the club was very close to going out of business at one point.

“But it's 13 years since we were last in a cup final and that’s a long time for this club to be out of the FAI Cup final.”
