New cases of novel coronavirus infection confirmed in Japan on Friday numbered 10,740, marking a record high.
On Thursday, 10,693 cases were reported.
The Tokyo metropolitan government reported 3,300 new cases of novel coronavirus on the day, exceeding 3,000 for the third consecutive day. The figure was up 1,941 compared with the same day in the previous week.
According to the Tokyo metropolitan government, the number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients rose by seven from Thursday to 88.
The latest seven-day average of people newly infected was 2,501.4, a 1.8-fold increase from the previous week, when the average was 1,386.
In Chiba Prefecture, 753 new cases were logged, marking a record high as the figure topped the previous high of 577 recorded on Wednesday.
