Record cold and some thick snow to behold

Several parts of the Hunter have shivered through their coldest days on record as a cold front brought icy conditions to the region and beyond.

Thursday brought the coldest maximum temperatures to Cooranbong (10.9C), Cessnock (8.8), Scone (8.2C) and Murrurundi (3.2C) on record at the Bureau of Meteorology.

Meanwhile, Newcastle had its coldest day in almost six years.

The maximum temperature for the day at Nobbys was 12.6 degrees. The last time the daytime temperature topped out so low was on July 11, 2015 when the mercury only reached 12.4 degrees.

A thick layer of snow also coated the Barrington Tops throughout the day.

Meagan Blanch made the trek to see the sight at Polblue and said it snowed the whole two hours she was up there.

"It was absolutely stunning," she said.

"There was so much snow compared to when we went last time. So fresh and fluffy."
