The Wallaroos' all-time top try scorer swears she felt like a little kid again after teaming up with the current queen of sevens to give Australia's women a dream start at the Singapore Sevens.
Maya Stewart, trying her hand to the game's short format after her record-breaking career in the 15-a-side ranks, marked her World Sevens Series debut with three tries in her two matches as Australia swept unbeaten into the semi-finals on Saturday.
The flying winger also got to see arguably the best sevens player in the women's game in full cry as teammate Maddi Levi scored five tries in the Aussies' three victories - a 35-7 romp over Fiji and 26-19 wins over both Japan and the USA.
The 25-year-old Stewart, who decided after last year's World Cup she wanted to test her athletic ability in a new arena, not only scored with her very first run, but then also concluded her big day with a match-winning, length-of-the-field try in the dying seconds against the US after Levi had earlier run in a hat-trick.
"It's honestly so surreal, this was one of my dreams as a young kid coming into rugby," said Stewart afterwards.
"To come out here as a capped player in the XVs format is a weird feeling. I've got a few Test matches under my belt -- but I feel like a five-year-old again!"
Stewart didn't get a run in the opening game as Levi and her sister Teagan, Madison Ashby, Kaitlin Shave and Faith Nathan all crossed the whitewash, but against the Japanese, she scored with her first touch and grabbed a second within five minutes before Maddison Levi and Heidi Dennis also scored.
The Australians' three wins booked them a semi-final date with Canada and the prospect of another final later on Sunday against their perennial rivals, New Zealand, who'll play USA in the other last-four contest.
It was a landmark day for men's skipper Henry Hutchison, who became the most-capped Australian men's player of all-time with his record 62nd tournament appearance taking him past former skipper Nick Malouf.
The 28-year-old celebrated with a fine defensive performance in the 19-14 victory over reigning champions Argentina, as Aden Ekanayake, Jayden Blake and Dietrich Roache scored the tries.
But it quickly unravelled for Australia, who went down 31-7 to France after an early Ekanayake try and then 29-10 to New Zealand, in which the gifted 20-year-old again got on the scoresheet, to miss out on ther semis.
"It's a lot, and there's still a few more in the circuit that have more than I do," said Hutchison of his appearance record.
"I love this sport and love this job and I'll do it for as long as I can."
