Over 9 million tourists have visited Tunisia as of December 20, 2019, setting a record for the country, announced Tourism and Handicrafts Minister Rene Trabelsi.

Total visitors will reach 9.5 million by December 31. The sector’s revenues exceeded TND5.53 billion (USD1.88 billion), Trabelsi revealed in a press conference on Friday.

The increase in the number of tourists is credited to the improvement in the security situation in Tunisia and efforts by the tourism ministry in coordination with all stakeholders in the sector. He added that the country saw an increase of 14 percent in French tourists, 70 percent in British tourists, 21.4 percent in Italian tourists and 6 percent in Russian tourists.

During this tourist season, Tunisia received around 2.6 million Algerian tourists and registered a growth rate of around 8.3 percent.

Moreover, the minister expected that work on the tourist boat in Gammarth will kick-off in early 2020.

The initial investment would be approximately TND750 million (around USD250 million). The project promises to provide 1,500 job opportunities during the coming three years.
