A record 2,848 new cases of infection with the novel coronavirus was confirmed Tuesday in Tokyo.
The figure was more than double that of a week ago, up by 1,461, and exceeding 1,000 for the eighth straight day, according to the Tokyo metropolitan government.
The previous high in the capital was 2,520, recorded Jan. 7.
Tuesday's surge possibly stemmed from more people taking tests for infection after the four-day weekend ended Sunday, according to the metropolitan government.
The moving average of daily infections over the past seven days was 1,762.6, up 49.4% from the preceding seven-day period's 1,180.
The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients in Tokyo increased by four from the previous day to 82.
