Osaka Prefecture confirmed a record 1,242 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, surpassing the previous high of 1,219 set on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Tokyo logged 843 new cases, marking the first time the figure in the capital has exceeded 800 since Jan. 29, when it reached 871.
The latest figure is also the highest seen since the state of emergency ended in the capital on March 21.
Wednesday also marked the 21st consecutive day of week-on-week increases, according to the Tokyo metropolitan government.
The capital's average number of new infections in the last seven days was 665.3, up 33.8% from 497.1 in the previous seven-day period.
