Reconstruction wouldn't be considered if we'd been sitting bottom, says St Mirren CEO

Tony Fitzpatrick believes league reconstruction would never have been considered if the Saints had found themselves bottom of the league.

Relegated Hearts are continuing their push for change in their bid to beat the drop by expanding the top flight next season.

St Mirren legend Fitzpatrick insists a restructure wouldn’t even be a possibility if St Mirren or Hamilton had been in the Jambos position.

He said: “I would quite like reconstruction at some point in the future but why now?

“We have an excellent new TV deal about to begin with Sky for next season.

"We have a good product with a top 12 and the promotion and relegation play-offs which we were part of and which generated such excitement.

"The proposals put forward a couple of weeks ago were initially for one year, then two years with three teams going down.

"We couldn’t support that and, in any case, had Hearts beaten us when they came to Paisley towards the end of the season then we would have gone down.

"I don’t think for a second anyone would have been talking about reconstructing the leagues had it been ourselves or Hamilton sitting at the bottom of the table.

“That’s my own personal point of view but, as I say, the club has always maintained it will carefully consider any proposal.”
