CHENNAI: For the fourth year in a row, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) has topped the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings in the overall category. It also retained its position as the country’s best engineering institution, which it has held ever since the rankings began in 2016. While Delhi’s Miranda
House, IIT, Jawaharlal Nehru University, All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) continued their good show, sought-after colleges such as St Stephen’s, Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) and Lady Shri Ram (LSR) have dropped in the rankings. St Stephen’s, for the first time, is not in the top 10. Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, topped in the university and research categories. Miranda House topped the list of arts and science colleges. Several government and private institutions in Tamil Nadu did well in the rankings.
They include Anna University, which improved over its 2021 ranks in overall (22), engineering (17) and research (21) categories. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in Coimbatore (16), Vellore Institute of Technology (18), National Institute of Technology in Trichy (21), and Bharathiar University (24) made it to the top 25 engineering colleges this year.

Saveetha Institute of Medical & Technical Sciences was ranked one in the dental category.
Three arts and science colleges in the state - Presidency College (3), Loyola College (4) and PSGR Krishnammal College for Women (6) - have retained their spot in the top 10.
Chief minister MK Stalin, who is a former student of Presidency College, congratulated the institution's administration, faculties and students for this achievement. "This is a great recognition of our Dravidian Model's excellence in higher education," he said.
IIT-M also featured among the top 10 in research (second) and management (tenth) categories. IIT-M director V Kamakoti said, "I dedicate this achievement to all the students, staff and faculty. Special thanks to all the frontline workers who kept the institute ticking during Covid. The NIRF process gives detailed feedback regarding our strengths and weaknesses. While we will continue to leverage on our strengths we will address the weaknesses to march forward."
The IITs at Madras, Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee and Guwahati figured in the top 10 in the overall and engineering rankings.
Jamia Millia Islamia and Vellore Institute of Technology made significant improvements in their rankings in the past three years. In the university category, JMI improved its ranking from 10th in 2020 to 3rd this year, while it also features in top 10 in law (7) and architecture (9), apart from being in top 20 in dental (16). VIT broke into the top 10 in research (10), while it also featured in ninth position in the university category, up from 16th in 2020.
In the 'universities' category, following IISc are JNU and JMI at second and third ranks, respectively. Banaras Hindu University (BHU), which was ranked third last year in this category, slipped to sixth position this year.Jadavpur University, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, University of Calcutta, VIT and University of Hyderabad, bagged the subsequent positions in the universities category.
The parameters used for ranking broadly cover teaching, learning and resources; research and professional practices; graduation outcome; outreach and Inclusivity; and perception.
Releasing the 2022 rankings on Friday, Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan said accreditation and assessment shall be mandatory for every higher education institution and they shall also be part of the NIRF ranking system.
"By next year, we will unify institutional accreditation which presently is done by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and programme accreditation by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). Ranking on Innovation done earlier by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will henceforth be integrated with NIRF. All institutions will be a part of the combined system of assessment, accreditation and rankings. Such a system will be transparent and objective," he said.
"From next year, NIRF ranking categories will also include innovation and entrepreneurship. NIRF rankings categories can be increased as per the needs. There is already work going on rankings of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and polytechnics," he added.
