Reclining Buddha gets clean-up

About 200 worshippers and others clean a nehanzo, or reclining Buddha, using poles with bamboo leaves during year-end cleaning called "susuharai" at Nanzoin temple in Sasaguri, Fukuoka Prefecture, on Thursday. Built in 1995, the 41-meter-long and 11-meter-high reclining Buddha is said to be one of world's largest bronze statues. Participants also cleaned the nehanzo with bleached cloths. A 69-year-old local resident said that she participated in the cleaning to express gratitude for her lack of difficulties in the past year and her hope for a peaceful Reiwa era.
