Reclaim These Streets organisers 'truly humbled' by public at Glasgow Sarah Everard vigils

Organisers behind covid-safe vigils held for Sarah Everard in Glasgow have said they are 'truly humbled' by the public turn out yesterday.

Glaswegians were invited to different locations in the city to tie a ribbon or leave a note in memory of Sarah after the gatherings were cancelled due to covid-safety fears.

Other women who died at the hands of men were also remembered, including Moira Jones and Karen Buckley.

Organiser Jenn Nimmo-Smith told Glasgow Live: "Yesterday was such an emotional and powerful day.

"Myself and co-organisers Nikki and Lauren Forde are truly humbled by the support shown across the city from our fellow Glaswegians.

"This is for Sarah Everard, for Moira Jones, for Karen Buckley. For sisters Nicole Smallman and Bibaa Henry. For all of you and us who have suffered at the hand’s of male violence.

"This does not stop here, moving forward we need to work together because we have a lot of work to do.

"Keep having the conversations, keep challenging your friends, keep educating your friends, family, colleagues and look out for one another."

The notes that were left yesterday evening have been collected by volunteers and will be collated into a 'manifesto for change'.

Organisers said: "With the notes our aim is to collate these into a manifesto for change that will continue on past this event and be the catalyst for real improvements in the lives and safety of all women and NBs."

Hundreds turned out to Queen's Park in the south side, Kelvingrove in the west end, the Mary Barbour statue in Govan and George Square in the city centre.

Others lit a candle in the window in the evenings or shone a light out their doorsteps and windows at 9.30pm, the time when Sarah is thought to have gone missing.

The First Minister also paid tribute to Sarah, and said she was 'struck' by memorials left for Moira Jones at Queen's Park, her constituency.

She added: "The park is in the heart of my constituency and I, too, think of Moira every time I walk through or around it. #ReclaimTheStreets."
