Reclaim the Park picnic to go ahead

A picnic planned for Bute Park will go ahead tomorrow, despite the event they are protesting against being cancelled.

Protesters against the Wonderstuff gig in Coopers Field, Bute Park, will hold a 'Reclaim the Bridge' picnic to raise awareness of the number of private events taking place in the park.

The Wonderstuff gig was due to take place tomorrow but has been cancelled following noise complaints.

Cardiff Council said the number of events taking place in Bute Park had not increased and the access bridge had served a successful purpose so far. "It has segregated events infrastructure from the people using the park, so they won't come into contact with them and can use the park at their leisure," a council spokesperson said.

Park-lover Gareth who is taking part in the picnic, said:

"We don't want the park to be for private events. It was handed over the people over Cardiff in 1947 and we want it to stay that way."

Participants in the picnic say they are against temporary structures being put up in Bute Park, but wrongly advertised the concert as having 60 bands play and three music tents.

Speaking after the event was cancelled Gareth said:

"It is wonderful that our park is no longer going to suffer the damage that such an event would have caused. I can only hope that event organisers will use the more suitable spaces in our city to hold their events instead of trying to privatise the few free, public spaces that we have."

The picnic is planned to start at 11am tomorrow, running until 3pm, on the access bridge in Bute Park.
