Reckless yobs terrorise Edinburgh in violent Bonfire Night rampage

An area of Edinburgh was terrorised by reckless yobs last night as they went on a violent rampage, throwing fireworks at passersby, vehicles and riot cops who were called in to assist.

One man was even seriously injured by a firework during the mayhem.

Student nurse Amy Dodds watched the chaos in Nidrrie unfold in horror after finishing her shift around 7pm at the city's A&E department in the Royal Infirmary.

The 24-year-old tried to help an elderly couple who were already on their way to hospital when they got caught up in the incident.

Amy told the Record: "I had just finished a shift at the hospital and I couldn't get anywhere as it was all blocked off by police.

"A taxi pulled over and I went to see what had happened. His two elderly passengers were already on the way to A&E as the husband was sick when the window smashed and the woman got glass all over her face.

"I was going to help her but her husband was very ill. Another woman stopped in her car and she took them to hospital.

"Another taxi driver stopped as he had his window smashed as well."

Amy believes around 50 youths were involved in the chaos as they targeted people from various directions on Niddrie Mains Road and Hay Avenue.

The chaos didn't stop with the taxi drivers as one service 21 bus also had a firework thrown in the back window.

Amy continued: "There were a couple of injured police men. They had formed a line with the riot shields but they threw a firework in between them.

"I was thinking of all my colleagues at the hospital and how it would be a tough night."

It is not currently known how many people were injured in the chaos.

Although there has been trouble in the area on November 5 in previous years, locals said this was the worst they had even seen it as some were even armed with baseball bats.

It is understood a police van also crashed as video footage posted online also caught the moment fireworks were let off in the middle of the road.

Amy added: "Something needs to be done. It is so bad."

Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
