'Nutter' driver films himself driving at more than 200mph on British motorway

Horrifying footage has emerged that shows a reckless driver clocking up 200mph on a UK motorway.

The clip is filmed inside the car and shows the motorist speeding at almost three times the national 70mph speed limit.

The driver, whose face is not shown, starts off on the inside lane at 61mph before he begins accelerating aggressively as their speed increases.

Their left hand is seen throughout the footage gripping the steering wheel while their other hand is out of shot, presumably holding the camera.

Within five seconds they have hit the 100mph before switching to the middle lane with 170mph showing on their speedometer.

Two seconds later they switch to the fast lane and as they carry on accelerating the vehicle can be heard making a shrill noise.

When they hit 200mph 20 seconds later the camera zooms into the dashboard and the clip ends a second later at 201mph.

The clip has been watched more than 215,000 times and retweeted by 1,700 Twitter users after being posted on Twitter by @CrimeLdn with the caption 'So crazy over 200mph' followed by a scary face and shocked emoji.

The clip also caught the attention of a twitter account belonging to Detective Superintendent Andy Cox who investigates fatal and serious road crashes and tackles transport network crime across London.

He tweeted: "Aware of this horrific driving. I have tasked some investigative work to see if we can identify the car involved and relevant location. Needless to say if we do we will seek the most robust action possible. #RoadSafety #London "

In a follow up tweet he said: "Investigative research confirms this horrific driving took place within @sussex_police area.

"I have spoken with the @SussexRoadsPol leadership team and shared the information gained so far and offered continued support. We remain in contact."

Horrified viewers commented on the driver's actions with one calling them 'a suicidal nutter'.

They added: "The fact he is filming and using one hand at that speed. Putting others at risk for a thrill adrenaline rush."

Another tweeted: "What an absolute tool, one handed at that speed. You'd be dead before you realised what had hit you.

"Any idea of the stopping distance from 201mph? Vague memory that at 100mph you are still at 70mph+ where the 70mph driver would stop."

A third commented: "Pretty sure this attracts a custodial sentence."
