Reckless Edinburgh Tesla driver captured cutting across HGV onto bypass slip road

By Kris Gourlay

A HGV driver travelling on the busy Edinburgh bypass has captured footage of the "dangerous" moment a Tesla driver cuts from the fast lane to a slip road right in front of his truck.

Patrick Owens was travelling on the A720 and as he approached the exit for the Bonnyrigg and Lasswade junction, a white Tesla suddenly swerves across two lanes to drive down the slip road.

Appearing to make a last second decision to change direction, Patrick says the car almost collided with his lorry with a serious collision only narrowly averted.

Patrick said he was driving a 44-ton HGV at the time and was shocked at what he had witnessed. He uses a dash cam fitted in the cab of his lorry to document incidents in case he ever needs evidence.

Patrick, 39, drives for Bannisters of Evesham, Worcestershire, and said close calls such as these are unfortunately the norm for lorry drivers, as smaller vehicles believe they can weave in and out of traffic.

He added: "It's a minute by minute occurrence for us HGV drivers. It's damn dangerous and is like a game of Russian roulette at times, very scary times."

From the video footage, as Patrick approaches the slip road, two vehicles pass him on the right hand side, with Patrick's lorry being positioned in the left hand lane.

As the slip road gets closer, a car attempting to use it would naturally slow and indicate while travelling in the same lane.

But the Tesla driver manoeuvre's the plush motor across two lanes in front of Patrick's HGV and making the exit with yards to spare.

Patrick's footage shows the Tesla driving over white lines marking separation gaps dividing the slip road from the main carriageway.

It then moves further across to the left with the car's red brake lights glaring as the driver quickly slows down once making it onto the slip road.
