A reckless Scots driver has been caught on camera ploughing into cones after trying to overtake an HGV near road works.
The incident happened shortly before 9:30am on August 3 amid a lane closure on the A1 southbound, near A198 Meadowmill in Tranent, East Lothian.
Marc Fleming, a coach driver from Bonnyrigg, spotted the incident happening in his rear view mirror and later reviewed the footage on his dashcam.
The shocking clip shows a Toyota Yaris in the distance before it quickly catches up to a Pollock HGV and the driver attempts to overtake.
The driver almost dashes in front of the lorry before it's forced to swerve away and crashes into traffic cones in place ahead of a lane closure.
The HGV driver who seems to also be in a hurry then overtakes the camera car.
Marc, 25, shared the footage online, he wrote: "I don't think I can publish what I think of the 'professional driver' - I’m a coach driver myself so know what is expected."
The clip has been viewed 125,000 times and received over 1,500 reactions, comments and shares.
Many users blamed the car driver for their reckless attempt to get in front, although some thought the HGV driver should have shown professionalism and slowed to prevent the incident.
One user commented: "Both are at fault, but the HGV driver needs to take responsibility for it, as a professional driver they need to be aware that other drivers aren’t as well trained and as skilled as truck drivers."
Another said: "The car driver is 100% at fault, you can clearly see the lane closing so why try and speed up and over take - the driver of the car brought that incident on their selves."
A third added: "Given the views of so many on here on who they think was in the wrong, it's little wonder the roads are such a nightmare."
After reviewing the footage, Mark Jackson, Sales and Customer Services Director for Pollock Scotrans said: "We take all road traffic incidents very seriously and they are all thoroughly investigated.
"Following an investigation any appropriate action is then taken.
"Our company policy is not to make public the results of any investigation."
Edmund King, AA president, said: “There was a sign clearly stating that the outside lane was closed 200 yards ahead yet the car driver continued in the outside lane which is a dangerous manoeuvre.
"The sign may have been obscured by a lorry going past but normally there should be other signs warning of a closed lane before 200 yards.
"Either way, cones on the outside of lane would indicate that the lane will be closed so the driver at this stage should have ideally dropped back and tucked in behind the HGV or potentially accelerated to get past.
"The lorry driver could also have taken evasive action by slowing down when he realised there was a car on the outside which he didn’t appear to do.
"Potentially this manoeuvre put the road workers in the coned zone at severe risk and exemplifies the life-saving importance of reacting to signs indicating lane closures in good time but also slows that other drivers should be forgiving when another driver makes a mistake.”
The Touchstone Traffic Solutions workman were carrying out work on behalf of BEAR Scotland, however did not make them aware of the incident.
A BEAR Scotland spokesperson said: "This video shows an example of reckless driving that is sadly all too common and puts the lives of road workers at risk.
"On this occasion nobody was hurt but the consequences could have been tragic. Please slow down and never attempt to overtake when driving through roadworks."
Police Scotland have confirmed that the incident wasn't reported to them.
