Reckless Celtic fan endangered the public after ignoring steward's pleas to put down flare

A football fan waved a green flare in celebration of a Celtic goal at Rugby Park.

Samuel Alderdice pleaded guilty to waving the flare in a reckless manner and endangering members of the public on September 23 last year.

Kilmarnock Sheriff Court heard that Alderdice, 31, from Dumbarton, West Dunbartonshire was in the Moffat Stand when around half-an-hour into the game Celtic scored.

The prosecutor told the court that police officers saw a green flare coming from an area near to a stairwell.

“There was no one near it at the time,” the prosecutor added.

“Officers then observed Alderdice pick up the flare and start waving it above his head while celebrating the goal.

“He was asked to put it down by a steward but he ignored this and, on the third occasion, the steward took hold of his arm and threw the flare to the ground.

“The flare was extinguished and officers arrested Alderdice in relation to culpable and reckless conduct.”

His agent told the court: “As far as he is aware, the flare was set off at the time of the goal being scored and he responded.”

The case was deferred until the end of this month for reports to be prepared.
