Reception held to honour achievements of Co Tyrone runner Nick Griggs

A reception has been held by Mid Ulster District Council to acknowledge the achievements of Co Tyrone athlete Nick Griggs.

The 16-year-old made headlines this year after winning gold with an impressive performance in the three thousand metres event at the European Athletics Under 20 Championships earlier this year in Estonia.

Nick, from Newmills in Co Tyrone, has also won three Irish titles at under 18 and under 20 levels.

His achievements have been made all the more impressive following a tragic accident just a month before his European title win, when older brother Joshua lost his life in an accident while at work in Banbridge.

The civic reception was held in the council offices in Dungannon on Monday past, with Nick attending alongside his parents and friends.

Council chair Paul McLean congratulated Nick on his honours, noting that his win in July came alongside competitors who were much older than him.

“All of this success would be exceptional at the best of times, but to do so at the age of just 16 in Estonia and all before the age of 20 illustrates the extent of your physical strength, talent and potential,” Cllr McLean said.

“I congratulate you on your achievements so far, knowing that there are more to come, and wish you well in your lifelong ambition to become an Olympic athlete.”
