SYDNEY (Reuters) - The recent rise in the Australian dollar is mainly a story about broad-based weakness in the U.S. dollar rather than any domestic factor, a top central banker said on Wednesday.
Answering questions after a speech on the fixed income market, Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Assistant Governor Christopher Kent also said a further increase in the local currency would have a slight dampening effect on economic growth and inflation at home.
"That's just a statement of fact," said Kent.
The Australian dollar has risen more than 7 percent on its U.S. counterpart over the last couple of months.
