Recent Hunter cluster linked to Crossroads, but source remains a mystery

Source unknown: St Pius X in Adamstown was temporarily closed for cleaning after a student recently tested positive to COVID-19.

THE most recent Hunter COVID-19 cases that temporarily closed two Newcastle high schools and several local businesses has been linked to the Sydney Crossroads Hotel, but the source of infection is still unknown.

Hunter New England Health said it was still not known exactly how the family cluster in Newcastle came to be infected with COVID-19. But genome sequencing had revealed it was the same virus as the Sydney Crossroads cluster.

There have been no new cases of the virus in the Hunter for almost three weeks.

It comes as NSW recorded three new cases of COVID-19, diagnosed in the 24 hours to 8pm on Monday.

The new cases bring the state total to 3,802.

Of the new cases, one case was acquired overseas and is in hotel quarantine, and two are close contacts of previous cases. There are 84 COVID-19 cases being treated by NSW Health - seven of those are in intensive care, and four are ventilated.

In Victoria, 116 new cases were announced on Tuesday, bringing the state's total to 18,330. There are 629 people in hospital, including 31 patients in intensive care, and 15 new coronavirus-related deaths reported.
