Neil Young and David Crosby both seem to have written off the possibility of reuniting Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. The classic rock super-group could be finally finished, with Crosby explaining that Young is “very angry with me”.
The latest update on the CSNY’s future was prompted by a simple bit of audience interaction: appearing at Philadelphia’s Academy of Music on 8 October, Young was asked by a member of the crowd about their plans to reunite. “CSNY will never tour again, ever,” the singer replied, “but I love those guys.”
Interrogated over Twitter, Crosby revealed that he and Young had a major falling out about two weeks ago. “I hear Neil said ‘there will never be any more CSNY shows’ that’s like saying there are mountains in Tibet,” Crosby wrote. “All things pass ... He’s pissed at me ... Believe me, not going to happen.”
Crosby also took the opportunity to disparage Young’s guitar-playing: “I know at least 20 better guitar players than Neil,” he tweeted. “3 in [the band] Snarky Puppy alone. Hendrix, Stevie Ray, get a grip.”
Although Crosby, Stills and Nash have toured across much of this year, they haven’t gone on the road with Young since 2007. The full band did play a one-off gig at Young’s annual Bridge School Benefit in 2013, but Crosby warned then that any further dates were unlikely. “I love working with Neil ... he makes fantastic music [and] I feel really good working with him,” he told Rolling Stone. “[But] you know who it’s up to.”
Earlier this year, Young okayed the release of a CSNY live album recorded in 1974. But with or without their most famous member, Crosby, Stills and Nash haven’t released a studio album since 1999. Plans for a comeback covers record, produced by Rick Rubin, were scrapped in 2011.
