Recall issued for packets of kale over fears they contain thistle

A recall has been issued for packets of kale over fears they may contain thistles.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland issued a notice for the CO-OP's Sliced Curly Kale today.

A spokesperson said: "CO-OP is recalling the above batches of its CO-OP Sliced Curly Kale, due to possible contamination with thistle (spiky weeds).

"Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in stores supplied with the implicated batches."

The product comes in an 160g packet and the affected packs have best before dates of August 4-11, 2020.

The kale comes from the UK.

Meanwhile an Irish salad product has been recalled separately over fears of a diarrhoea-causing parasite.

Gold River Quality Mixed Salad Leaves are being withdrawn from sale as a precaution due to the possible presence of cryptosporidium.

All batches and best before dates of the product, which comes from Ireland, are subject to the recall.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland issued the alert and warned of the dangers linked with consuming the parasite.

A spokesman said: "Cryptosporidium is a microscopic parasite which causes cryptosporidiosis, a common form of gastroenteritis.

"Watery diarrhoea is the most common symptom of cryptosporidiosis, which can be particularly serious for young children, older people, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems."

Environmental Health Officers are to notify the food safety chiefs if the affected salad leaves are found to be in use.

The Irish Mirror has contacted Gold River for comment.
