Rebel Wilson’s new Pooch Perfect series attracts backlash over treatment of animals

Rebel Wilson’s new series has been met with backlash and complaints from viewers, with some comparing the treatment of dogs on the show to “animal abuse”

Pooch Perfect – which debuted on ABC on Tuesday night (30 March) – is a dog grooming reality competition, in which the leading creative dog groomers in the US and their assistants compete each week for a prize of $100,000.

The Bridesmaids actor hosts the show, with reality star Lisa Vanderpump judging on a panel alongside veterinarian Dr Callie Harris and popular dog groomer Jorge Bendersky.

Many viewers, however, criticised the series on social media with some asking whether the grooming shown on screen could amount to animal abuse.

During Tuesday’s premiere episode, the contestants were seen shaping and dying their dog’s fur. It was specified that the products used are specifically designed for pets, including temporary, dog-safe dyes.

“This show is a disgusting display. This is not artistry, it is animal abuse,” said one Twitter user.

Another added: “Anybody else think this is kinda animal abuse? I’m uncomfortable lol.”

A third wrote: “Dogs hate this show.”

“You can’t convince me dogs like being poked, cut, bejeweled, and dressed up like this,” said a fourth person.

One user commented: “Hello @peta??? Save these poor dogs from this nightmare!”

“The longer I watch this show, the worse I feel for these poor dogs,” said another. Someone else added: “Can’t even watch this show without feeling sad for the dogs. This is so unnecessary.”

The Independent has reached out to a representative for Wilson and ABC for comment.

A British version of the series – hosted by Sheridan Smith – was met with similar criticism when it aired on BBC One last month.
