Rebekah Brooks 'planned to meet Andy Coulson before police reopened inquiry'

Rebekah Brooks, the former chief executive of News International, arranged to meet Andy Coulson, David Cameron's former spin doctor, just days before the police reopened their investigation into phone hacking, the Old Bailey has heard.

An email exchange between Brooks and Coulson planning a breakfast meeting in the Halkin Hotel in Victoria in January 2011 was shown to the jury.

Mark Bryant Heron, counsel for the prosecution, said an electronic diary note was made for this meeting for 14 January, 12 days before the Operation Weeting investigation was opened.

A second email from Brooks's personal assistant Cheryl Carter to her on 21 January 2011 stated: "Please call Andy Coulson."

The jury heard that Operating Weeting was launched on 26 January 2011.

The trial continues.
