Rebecca Knaak strikes late to leave Manchester City on verge of WSL title

Rebecca Knaak headed home a late winner for Manchester City against Liverpool - (Reuters)

Manchester City are on the brink of their first Women’s Super League title in a decade after Rebecca Knaak’s stoppage-time header earned a critical 1-0 win over Liverpool.

A week after a shock defeat at Brighton offered Arsenal hope, City were close to dropping more points to their former manager Gareth Taylor, but in the first of six minutes added on Knaak’s stooping header squirmed under the otherwise excellent Liverpool goalkeeper Jennifer Falk.

The goal ensured City end the campaign with a perfect winning record at the Joie Stadium, and knowing a win on the final day at West Ham will bring their first title in 10 years even if Arsenal can win their three games in hand.

Sam Kerr scored her 64th WSL goal to become Chelsea’s all-time top-flight top scorer in their 3-1 victory at Leicester.

Lauren James added a magnificent double within six first-half minutes before Shannon O’Brien capitalised on a defensive error to claw a goal back.

Victory guaranteed Chelsea a minimum third-place finish, and at least next season’s Women’s Champions League qualifying round, while WSL-basement Leicester will play WSL2 third-place finishers Charlton in a relegation play-off.

Tottenham survived a late scare to beat London City Lionesses 2-1. Spurs were in control after Signe Gaupset capitalised on a poor attempt to play out by the visitors and Olivia Holdt hit a stunning strike from outside the box.

Alanna Kennedy turned in Delphine Cascarino’s corner in the 90th minute to give the visitors hope, but Freya Godfrey could not convert a stoppage-time chance.
