Why Tahith Chong is still at Manchester United despite signing for Birmingham

The inclusion of Tahith Chong on the Manchester United teamsheet for their friendly at Derby County may have raised a few eyebrows.

After all, many United fans thought that Chong would have been long gone after agreeing to a season-long loan elsewhere.

The 21-year-old was unveiled by Birmingham City earlier this month, after the Championship club agreed a one-year loan deal.

Lee Bowyer's side brokered an arrangement with United for the Dutchman to spend the season at St Andrew's. But the deal included a unique clause that means Chong will spend pre-season playing for United before heading off to the Midlands.

It means he will be in contention for United's remaining friendlies with QPR, Brentford, Preston and Everton rather than being involved in Birmingham's warm-up matches with Barrow and Northampton.

Chong put in a thoroughly impressive performance for United at Pride Park last Sunday.

He was lively on the wing, showed nice touches and capped off his 45-minute cameo with the opener. He was alert to pick the pocket of Derby's Max Bird and although his initial attempt was saved, he reacted to poke home.

His United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also praised the youngster.

"He did well to win the ball and I thought maybe he should have finished far corner," said the Norwegian.

"But well done to keep going and he's got the talent, so good luck for his time at Birmingham."

This will be Chong's third spell away from United after two loans last season.

He started the campaign at German side Werder Bremen before that was cut short and he finished the second half of the season at Belgian side Club Brugge.

As well as Chong, Birmingham have added fellow loanee Dion Sanderson from Wolves and recruited Ryan Woods and Chuks Aneke. City begin the Championship season away at Sheffield United on August 7.
