Reason why Nick Knowles is stepping down from BBC's DIY SOS after 22 years

Nick Knowles will step back from presenting DIY:SOS for the first time in the show’s 22 year history following a spat with the BBC over his Shreddies ad campaign.

The presenter agreed to sit out a Children in Need special, filming this month, because it clashes with the controversial advert campaign which saw him eat the breakfast cereal wearing a hard hat, dressed as a builder. It was deemed to have gone against BBC guidelines.

The row almost saw Nick lose the job he has held since the show’s first episode in 1999, before he came to an agreement with the BBC in May.

Comic Rhod Gilbert will replace the presenter when he travels to Hull with the team for a project that will help local children.

Rhod said: “It’s a great honour to step in to Nick’s enormous steel toe-capped boots and be involved in Children in Need. I’m looking forward to joining the infamous DIY SOS team, and rallying an enormous group of local volunteers on a wonderfully ambitious and important project. After having tried my hand at over 30 jobs on my ‘Work Experience’ TV programme, I’m hoping I may even be of some use around the site.

“My vis is high and my hat is hard, so bring it on.”

Nick, who will return to present the show in 2022 once the campaign is over, has said: “The DIY SOS Children In Need special will air in November with a guest presenter and I will be cheering them on from the sidelines.”

In May, the DIY SOS star is said to have angered BBC bosses as he fronted a campaign for the cereal brand, inadvertently breaching BBC rules.

The Shreddies advert first appeared in February, in which the presenter was referred to as "Nick get it done Knowles".

Meanwhile, Nick celebrated in June after landing two new Channel 5 home renovation shows.

Channel 5 have confirmed Nick Knowles' Better Homes will hit our screens later the summer, with another show on the way.

The second series, Nick Knowles: Your Life On Your Lawn, will see the him help families living in cluttered homes to 'realise the potential of the properties they originally fell in love with'.
