Reason Man Utd and Chelsea snubbed Nathan Ake transfer as defender signs for Man City

Manchester Unied and Chelsea both opted against a move for Nathan Ake due to doubts over his physicality.

The Dutch defender completed a £41m move to Manchester City on Wednesday signing a five-year deal at the Etihad.

Bournemouth's relegation had always meant that Ake would seek pastures new.

Chelsea, who sold Ake to the Cherries three years ago, had the chance to sign the defender for £40m as per a clause in his contract, but chose not to, reports the Athletic.

They had reservations over the 25-year-old's height and strength and will explore other avenues.

Frank Lampard is expected to add a central defender in the coming weeks following Chelsea's problems at the back.

United meanwhile could also be in the market but again opted against a swoop for Ake.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer approached the player after his side had beaten Bournemouth 5-2 earlier this season sparking rumours of an approach.

But, like Chelsea, they had doubts over his physicality and also felt he didn't have a big enough influence on the Cherries' defence.

United spent a world record amount of a centre-half last summer when they signed Harry Maguire from Leicester.

He has partnered Victor Lindelof for much of the season but the Red Devils may seek new faces in that area.

Ake will provide competition for the like of John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi on the blue half of Manchester.

The club's decision not to replace Vincent Kompany 12 months ago came back to haunt them, although it wasn't helped by Aymeric Laporte's long-term injury.

But Ake is relishing the opportunity to mix it with the star studded squad at the Etihad.

“City have been the best side in England over the course of the last decade,” he said.

“Coming here is a dream for me. This is a top side full of world-class players. Everywhere you look in this squad there are big names with international pedigree."
