'Reason' large police convoy spotted heading through Liverpool

A large police convoy has been spotted making its way between Knowsley and Liverpool city centre.

This morning an eye-catching formation of police motorbikes and Land Rovers was caught on video leaving the Lord Derby estate in Knowsley. Today, May 26, a new national memorial and Garden of Reflection for the Battle of the Atlantic was unveiled at Our Lady and St Nicholas’s Church near the Pier Head.

The convoy was believed to be escorting Princess Anne, patron of the Battle of the Atlantic Memorial Charity, who was a guest of honour at the event.

This year will mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic and Liverpool will be hosting a series of events to commemorate the commitment and resilience of the brave men and women who ensured Britain and its allies overcame the malignant threat of Nazi Germany.

VIPs in attendance included Denis Rose, John Dennett BEM, and Ken Benbow, all local veterans of the Battle of the Atlantic campaign. The dignitaries in attendance were Mark Blundell, Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside; the Rt. Hon. Ben Wallace MP, Secretary of State for Defence; the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Mayors of Wirral and Sefton, as well as the Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram.

Princess Anne arrived at the church at 12pm today and gave a speech to onlookers saying that it is an honour to be in Liverpool. The service ended with a spectacular flypast by historic aircraft, including Swordfish, Poseidon, and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
