‘Really struggling’: Hakeem Jeffries points out GOP’s 15-month humiliation tour, and now Mike Johnson is sweating bullets

Hakeem Jeffries has every right to grin. The November midterms are looming, with polling and special election results indicating that the Democrats will take control of both the Senate and House later this year.

This would immediately reduce Donald Trump’s power, forcing him to contend with a divided government, with Democrats able to block any law he wants to pass. Trump and his cronies are visibly terrified that this reality will soon arrive, with JD Vance bleating over the weekend that the Democrats are out to “destroy this country”.

House minority leader and leader of the House Democratic Caucus, Hakeem Jeffries, is looking extremely smug about the midterms. Speaking at a press conference about the ongoing shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, Jeffries practically gloated about how rosy things look for Dems right now:

MAGA Mike Johnson is really struggling right now. They have a new message every week. But what is also happening, Republicans have been losing elections for the last 15 consecutive months. Over and over, in deep red places like Texas, Louisiana, and most recently in Florida. Donald Trump will now be represented at Mar-a-Lago by a Democrat. When are they going to learn their lesson?”

Jeffries is referring to three Congressional Special Elections, where Dems held seats in Arizona, Virginia, and Texas, as well as a swathe of State Legislative Special Elections, which have seen Democrats flip seats in Florida, Arkansas, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania.

The tide is turning

The Democrat representing Donald Trump that Jeffries refers to is first-time candidate Emily Gregory, who just last week defeated Trump-backed Republican Jon Maples to secure Florida District 87. For reference, in 2024, this district was won by a Republican by 19 percentage points.

This is panic stations for MAGA. They may be able to kid themselves that, in political terms, the months between now and November are an eternity in politics. Sadly for them, all indications are that things are going to get worse for Trump as the disastrous economic consequences of his pointless war with Iran hit regular Americans in the wallet.

There’s no route out of this for Republicans. Over the last decade, the party has been hollowed out and replaced with MAGA purists, and few of them will have the guts to openly criticize Trump in an effort to save their own seats. If the USS Trump is sinking, they’re all going to go down with it – and there are no lifeboats.
