‘Really?’: Lowe’s customers asks home and garden worker what they do with old flowers. She can’t believe the worker’s response

A salon owner and self-proclaimed trophy wife had a bone to pick with the CEO of Lowe’s after learning some concerning information from a store associate.

In a TikTok with nearly 120,00 views, Lacie (@lacie1183) says, “I was just asking one of the ladies in the garden department, ‘Hey, when are all your flowers getting, like, marked down for clearance?’” She says a sale must be coming since seasons are changing and the workers will be putting out pumpkin decor and “fall stuff.”

The worker’s response? “She basically said that [the CEO] would rather throw them away than to mark them down for clearance.”

She notes that she is willing to pay around $5 for a dying flower, but she is not willing to pay $15 for the practically dead rose she saw that had been discounted from $29.

‘Home Depot does the same thing’

In the comments section, viewers accused Lowe’s and Home Depot of throwing away plants that had begun wilting. Others said their stores offer discounts and they regularly clear the clearance shelves for their home gardens.

Carol Hinojosa wrote, “Home Depot throws them away. My Lowe’s always has a huge clearance section. All of mine came from clearance,” and attached a lovely photo of the plants she got from Lowe’s surrounding her pool.

A second said, “Lowes always has clearance racks, and cuts them 50% off everytime they start looking a little sad. I almost never pay full price at Lowes. Sounds like its just that ones local management making that decision.”

One shared a store that appears to be beating both Home Depot and Lowe’s in terms of customer satisfaction with how it deals with old plants. They said, “Our local Walmart gave away all their leftover trees and shrubs yesterday.”

Does Lowe’s really just trash dying plants?

According to a Reddit thread on the subject, it depends. Some respondents said that stores like Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Trader Joe’s just toss them out. However, others said their local Lowe’s store has a discount rack.

Respondents to a Quora thread agreed Lowe’s and Home Depot are unlikely to give away plants on their last legs, but plants that simply don’t look very good might be offered at a steep discount.

Where can you get old flowers for cheap?

Several commenters on the TikTok suggested that the benefit of going to a local florist over a large retailer like Lowe’s is that they’ll discount old flowers. According to florist Anna Zverkova, this is correct.

She writes, “Most florists that I know will offer heavy discounts on flowers that they can’t sell. You can ask your local florist when they restock and then check the evening prior to the restock for discount sales, most florists will be happy to make at least some money out of older blooms.”

She adds that some florists do giveaways, even of flowers in perfectly sellable condition. She says they do this most often for loyal customers, so it’s good to build a relationship with a local florist.

Redditors in a thread on getting damaged houseplants for a discount also said it’s not a bad idea to ask workers for a discount, as it may be within their discretion to give you a damaged plant at a discount or for free.
