Real Madrid win Spanish Super Cup on penalties after last-gasp Federico Valverde foul

Real Madrid won the 11th Spanish Super Cup in their history after beating rivals Atletico Madrid on penalties following a goalless 120 minutes in Saudi Arabia.

Dani Carvajal, Rodrygo Goes and Luka Modric scored for Real in the shootout while Atletico's Saul Niguez hit the post and Thomas Paratey saw his effort saved by Thibaut Courtois, and Real's talisman Sergio Ramos made no mistake to hand Zinedine Zidane his tenth trophy as manager of Los Blancos.

After a relatively dull 90 minutes there was controversy just five minutes from the end of extra time when Alvaro Morata raced through one-on-one for Atletico and was hacked down from behind by Federico Valverde, sparking a melee between the two sides.

Valverde was sent off but the foul effectively won his side the match, with Morata looking sure to score if he hadn't made the tackle.

Speaking after the game Valverde, who won Man of the Match despite his red card, said: "The red card? It's something you shouldn't do. I said sorry to Morata. But it was the only thing I could do."

Atletico manager Diego Simeone added: "Valverde did what he had to do. I told him that anyone would have done the same in his position because it quite possibly ends up in a goal."

The tournament was being played in a new format for the first time, with last season's top two from La Liga taking on the Copa del Rey finalists in a four-team competition.

Both sides are still well in the title race, with Real level on points with Barcelona at the top of the table but in second place on goal difference, while Atletico lie five points behind the two teams.

Real next take on Sevilla on Saturday while Atletico face an away trip to Eibar.
