Real Madrid vs Juventus LIVE: Club World Cup result, latest updates and reaction as Bianconeri knocked out

Real Madrid vs Juventus LIVE

Gonzalo Garcia scored the only goal as Real Madrid edged Juventus out of the Club World Cup in a lethargic affair in Miami. The Floridian humidity has a special knack for draining one’s energy, and it clearly had that same effect today as the two European heavyweights struggled for energy and creativity.

The 21-year-old Garcia, drafted in as an understudy to the poorly Kylian Mbappe, scored what proved to be the winner shortly after half-time to strengthen his claim to a more prominent role in the star-studded side.

Juventus came into the tie fresh off the back of a thoroughly demoralising 5-2 loss to Manchester City, but Igor Tudor’s much-rotated side arrived at the Hard Rock Stadium keen to get their own back. Real, on the other hand, looked off the boil from the first whistle, dogged in defence when called upon but blunt in attack, reduced in the first half to speculative long-range efforts which Michele Di Gregorio was more than happy to catch.

HALF TIME: Real Madrid 0-0 Juventus

20:00

We are underway in Miami!

The players are out...

19:53 , Arthur Ferridge

The players carry on this bizarre new Club World Cup tradition as they march out of the changing rooms one by one under clear blue Miami skies.

Let’s hope they stay that way. Kick off comes next!

Kick off comes next!

19:48 , Arthur Ferridge

This round of 16 clash will be getting underway shortly!

A big day for Kylian Mbappe

19:40 , Arthur Ferridge

Kylian Mbappe is set to receive some minutes today for the first time since he was hospitalised with acute gastroenteritis.

Should he appear, he will make his first appearance under new head coach Xabi Alonso.

First impressions mean everything. How will he get on under the Spaniard’s watchful eye?

Yildiz looking forward to facing Huijsen

19:38 , Arthur Ferridge

Kenan Yildiz said he was looking forward to playing against his former academy teammate Dean Huijsen.

“We are texting everyday, calling everyday, so it will be nice,” he laughed.

He continued, saying the side have ‘learned’ from last week’s Man City drubbing.

“You learn from every defeat. We just want to do our best. We have worked hard this week to prepare for the game today.”

Rodrygo to Arsenal latest

19:27 , Arthur Ferridge

Rodrygo is on the bench today - the thinking is that Real Madrid are looking to protect him ahead of a potential move away from the club.

He was left out of last week’s meeting with Salzburg, too, and the previous meeting with Al Hilal, though Xabi Alonso said that was a technical decision.

“He looks good to me, enthusiastic,” Alonso said. “The other day was a technical decision. He remains important and we will need him in the Club World Cup.

“He is a special player and he will have a significant role.”

On the topic of weather delays...

19:17 , Arthur Ferridge

Enzo Maresca had choice words for the tournament organisers after Chelsea’s round of 16 tie against Benfica was delayed for close to two hours by a thunderstorm.

"I think it's a joke, to be honest," said Maresca.

"It's not football. It's completely something new; I struggle to understand.

"I can understand if it's security reasons but if you suspend seven or eight games then it's probably not the right place to do the competition.

"It's not normal to suspend the game. In a World Cup, how many games are suspended? Zero probably. In Europe how many games get suspended? Zero.

"We've been here two weeks and they've already suspended six or seven games. There is some problems for me personally."

Miami weather report

19:08 , Arthur Ferridge

It is another toasty one in Miami, where temperatures currently sit at 31° with close to 70% humidity.

It has been raining heavily in the city this afternoon, with thunderstorms forecast for the evening.

Skies look blue at the moment. Hopefully, we will not be subjected to any weather delays this evening.

What to know about this Juventus squad

18:55 , Arthur Ferridge

Igor Tudor has named a strong squad for this tie.

Michele Di Gregorio returns in goal after impressing against Man City, despite shipping five.

Pierre Kalulu also returns to the lineup after he scored an own goal last time out.

Randal Kolo Muani, Sergio Conceicao, Andrea Cambiaso, and Marcus Thuram all return to the XI after being dropped last time out.

Juventus starting XI

18:51 , Arthur Ferridge

Igor Tudor goes strong with his round of 16 squad.

Juventus XI: Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Rugani, Kelly, Alberto, Locatelli; Thuram, Cambiaso, Conceicao, Yildiz; Kolo Muani

Subs: Pinsogloui, Daffara, Garofani, Bremer, Gatti, Koopmeiners, Vlahovic, Gonzalez, McKennie, Adzic, Kostic, Weah, Douglas Luiz, Rouhi, Mbangula

Making sense of that Real Madrid squad

18:50 , Arthur Ferridge

Here’s what you need to know about Xabi Alonso’s lineup.

It is a strong squad all in all, but with some notable exclusions.

It had been rumoured that Mbappe would return to the starting lineup having recovered from acute gastroenteritis, but he is only deemed fit enough for the bench.

Gonzalo Garcia has served as his understudy and impressed despite only making three La Liga appearances last season.

Rodrygo joins Mbappe among the substitutes as he looks set to leave the club.

Modric fails to make the XI in what could be his final Real Madrid match.

Real Madrid starting XI

18:45 , Arthur Ferridge

Xabi Alonso names his starting lineup.

Real Madrid XI: Courtois; Trent, Rudiger, Huijsen, Fran Garcia; Valverde (c), Tchouameni, Arda Guler, Bellingham; Vini Jr, Gonzalo

Subs: Lunin, Carvajal, Militao, Mbappe, Modric, Rodrygo, Lucas Vazquez, Ceballos, Brahim, Youssef, Jacobo, Asencio, Chema, Victor Munoz, Mario Martin

Who awaits in the next round?

18:43 , Arthur Ferridge

The winner of this evening’s tie will face either Borussia Dortmund or Monterrey in the quarter-finals.

That match takes place at 2am BST on Wednesday.

Real Madrid and Juventus group stage results in full

18:37 , Arthur Ferridge

Both of tonight’s contenders had mixed results in the group stages. Here are their results in full:

Real Madrid

Real Madrid 1-1 Al Hilal

Real Madrid 3-1 Al Ain

Real Madrid 3-0 RB Salzburg

Juventus

Juventus 5-0 Al Ain

Juventus 4-1 Wydad AC

Juventus 2-5 Manchester City

Last time out for Juventus

18:28 , Arthur Ferridge

Juventus endured a difficult outing last time out in the Club World Cup, falling 5-2 to Man City.

The two sides came into the match level on both points and goal difference, but with the knowledge that whoever finished atop the group would move on to a more friendly side of the knockout draw, likely to avoid the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid.

City had cruised through the tournament until that point and faced their first proper test against Igor Tudor’s men, but swiftly reduced the 36-time Serie A champions to the level of their minnow groupmates Wydad AC and Al-Ain, closing out the group stages with a statement win marked by flashy, swaggering goals.

Juventus progressed despite the humbling defeat, but now face Real Madrid in the round of 16, a task they will not look forward to after such a demoralising result.

The tale of the tape

18:20 , Arthur Ferridge

This will be the first meeting between Real Madrid and Juventus since 2017-18, when Los Blancos knocked the Bianconeri out in the Champions League quarter finals despite losing the second leg 3-1.

Here is how the overall head-to-head shakes out...

Real Madrid wins: 11

Juventus wins: 8

Draws: 2

Standard Sport's prediction

18:11 , Arthur Ferridge

Heading into this tie, Juventus will be looking to get their own back. Last week’s loss to Man City was many things, but chiefly it was profoundly demoralising. There is no rest for the weary, though, with Real Madrid right around the corner.

Juventus could not cope with City’s tight, tricky passing and free-flowing attacks in that tie, and, unfortunately, that is exactly what Real Madrid are good at. Due to face Vinicius Jr, Jude Bellingham, Luka Modric, and Kylian Mbappe, the task will not be much easier.

The Bianconeri have their work cut out for them. If nothing else, they must look to avoid embarrassment.

Real Madrid to win, 2-1

Juventus early team news

18:03 , Arthur Ferridge

There will be upheaval in the Juventus camp ahead of this tie Igor Tudor came under fire for his selection in last week’s 5-2 group stage defeat to Man City.

His star forwards, Kenan Yildiz and Francisco Conceicao, were both left on the bench, with Kephren Thuram and Andrea Cambiaso also left out.

They should all be set to return on Tuesday, though, as Tudor will surely come out with all guns blazing as he looks to pull off a spectacular upset.

Real Madrid early team news

17:55 , Arthur Ferridge

According to reports in the Italian press, Kylian Mbappe is due to start after recovering from a nasty bout of gastroenteritis, for which he was hospitalised ahead of Los Blancos’ tournament opener.

Gonzalo Garcia proved a capable understudy but seems set to return to the bench.

One would expect few changes to the Real Madrid lineup, which has been largely unchanged throughout the group stage, though Arda Guler’s involvement could be in question after he was hooked early against Salzburg.
