Real Madrid vs Celtic referee fired Conference League DEMOTION warning as penalty calls slammed

Former Arsenal star Samir Nasri reckons Stephanie Frappart risks being dropped from the Champions League after her performance during Celtic's clash with Real Madrid.

VAR dominated the first half talking points from the Champions League showdown at the Bernabeu with the Scottish champions twice punished for handball decisions. Benoit Millout in the VAR room called Frappart to the monitor to review Moritz Jenz's handball, which allowed Luka Modric to step up to the spot and give Los Blancos the lead during the opening exchanges, before Matt O’Riley was also penalised for for the same offence before Rodrygo stepped up to beat Joe Hart,

Frappart then awarded her third penalty of the evening as Real Madrid's Ferland Mendy was punished for clipping Liel Abada in the box, but Josip Juranovic was denied by Thibaut Courtois. However, the series of big calls in the 5-1 victory for the European champions has led to heavy criticism from Nasri - who claims the experienced official forgot she was in the Champions League rather than Ligue 1.

Frappart has regularly taken control of major showpiece finals in France after being appointed to the referee roster in 2019. She most recently refereed the 2022 French Cup Final between Nice and Nantes.

The whistler became the first woman to take charge of a men's Champions League fixture when she oversaw Juventus' clash with Dinamo Zagreb in 2020. Celtic's visit to Madrid was the second outing of the tournament.

Despite this, Nasri told Canal Foot : "Stephanie Frappart maybe she thought she was in Ligue 1. That's why there were so many penalties. But if it continues like this, she will end up in the Conference League."
