Penalties: Real Madrid 1-2 Arsenal

Saka puts it right where Isco did, a wonderfully struck penalty by the 17-year-old and Arsenal nose ahead with Varane stepping up with a chance to hold serve.

Penalties: Real Madrid 1-1 Arsenal

Martinez guesses correctly but Isco fires it right into the left-hand corner. Level after two attempts each.

Penalties: Real Madrid 0-1 Arsenal

Xhaka takes an even poorer penalty than Bale. Right down the middle and easily saved by Courtois!

Penalties: Real Madrid 0-1 Arsenal

Bale, so brilliant on a fairytale night in Landover, takes a very poor penalty nearly right down the middle and Martinez easily corrals it! Yikes on bikes!

Nelson is first to take and he coolly drives it into the left-hand side of the goal past Courtois.

Full-time: Real Madrid 2-2 Arsenal

We’re headed to a penalty shootout after Real’s final chance fizzles out and the referee blows the whistle right on the 94-minute mark.

Updated

90 min+3: Real Madrid threatening ominously in the build-up but it does look like we’re headed for penalties.

90 min: The fourth official has signaled for four minutes of added time. Remember: We’ll go to directly a penalty shootout if no one can break the stalemate before the whistle.

86 min: The stage is set for a wild finish and it looks as if Arsenal are poised to provide it as super sub Eddie Nketiah comes agonizingly close to scoring twice in a minute. First a long ball releases him but a clumsy second touch bails out the keeper, then moments later a header off service from Nelson drifts just wide of the goal.

82 min: Tonight’s announced attendance is 52,286, a few miles short of capacity but about what the building’s primary tenants will be lucky to draw in December.

80 min: Maybe Gareth Bale should stay. Maybe there’s no problem that doesn’t have a solution. Maybe.

76 min: Bale clears a surefire Arsenal goal from Chambers off the line to bail out an out-of-position Courtois!

75 min: Emery makes four substitutions with a quarter hour left with Nketiah, Saka, Nelson and Burton coming on for Lacazette, Aubameyang, Ozil and Mkhitaryan.

72 min: Arsenal win a corner and Monreal is able to head it sharply on target despite red shirts being well outnumbered by blue in the area, but Courtois is able to reach toward the upper left corner for the save.

68 min: Arsenal have shown a pulse just now with a rare second-half chance but Aubameyang’s stabbing effort off a just-late through pass from Mkhitaryan is broken up by a fast-closing Courtois.

66 min: Four more changes for Real Madrid as De La Fuente, Fidalgo, Seoane and Vinicius come on for Ramos, Kroos, Modric and the fallen. Moments later Bale nearly makes it three for the Spanish side with a nifty shot off the otuside of left foot which demands a hair-trigger save from the embattled Martinez.

63 min: Asensio is down and he looks hurt. Fairly badly, in fact. This is not good. He’s been stretchered off the pitch by the medical staff past the gaggle of Real Madrid youngsters waiting to enter the fray and it seems Zidane may have to re-think his wave of substitutions.

56 min: GOAL! Real Madrid 2-2 Arsenal (Asensio, 59 min)

Equalizer! The second goal in three minutes levels the score and surely it was the prettier of the pair. Clean and precise build-up ends with a clinical finish by Asensio and Arsenal, who have scarcely made it out of their own half since the interval, are squarely on the back foot.

56 min: GOAL! Real Madrid 1-2 Arsenal (Bale, 56 min)

Isco surges into the box and finds Asensio, which prompts a moment of chaos in front of goal and Bale emerges to poke it in from six yards and Real Madrid have cut the deficit in half.

52 min: A hell of a left-footed strike by Asensio in a thicket of space from 25 yards beats Martinez and hammers off the post, dropping to Varane before it’s cleared from danger.

51 min: Xhaka is down at midfield after a collision and he’s making his way gingerly off the pitch after getting treated by the medical staff.

48 min: Courtois, Odriozola, Marcelo, Asesnsio, Isco and Bale are in for Real Madrid at the half in place of Keylor, Carvajal, Mendy, Lucas, Lucas and Benzema. Just one for the Gunners as Monreal enters for Willock.

46 min: And we’re off in the second half! Lots of subs to make track of and we’ve have them over to you in short order.

Half time: Real Madrid 0-2 Arsenal

Well, that was eventful. Arsenal took advantage of a sluggish start and early red from their Spanish opponents, but Real Madrid broke hard late with a couple of serious chances and are back to even strength even if they don’t have a goal to show for it.

Updated

45 min: A couple of near chances for Real over the last few minutes, then Kroos sends a gorgeous ball into the far post for a waiting Benzema, but his header hits the woodwork and veers out past the end line.

RED CARD! (Sokratis, 40 min)

Well, well, well! Sokratis pulls down Modric in fairly innocuous fashion, but a clamor from the Real Madrid gaggle ends with the Greek defender being shown a second yellow in three minutes and were back at even strength!

Updated

37 min: Sokratis is shown yellow after getting dispossessed in a moment of carelessness, then putting his arm across his pickpocket and pulling him down.

33 min: Real Madrid win a free kick from distance and Modric takes it. His offering targets Sergio Ramos in the center of the area and a spat of chaos with a couple of pinball deflections nearly results in a chance for the Spanish international, but it’s cleared and Arsenal are on the move once more.

30 min: A half hour down and Arsenal remain on the front foot, turning the screw on their undermanned opponents.

Updated

26 min: Arsenal’s high press, heaps of trouble for Real Madrid in nine minutes at full strength, continues to trouble their opponents when down to 10 men. They look so sharp going forward, seemingly generating a chance or at worst a whisper of one with every foray into the final third.

GOAL! Real Madrid 0-2 Arsenal (Aubameyang, 24 min)

Moments after the Spanish side’s chance it’s Aubameyang who comes in from behind and hits a low shot that caroms helplessly off the boot of Sergio Ramos into the roof of the net. A wonderful goal by the Gunners who have doubled their pleasure against 10-men Real Madrid.

22 min: Mendy beats two men in the area and rips a shot toward the near post that’s easily corralled by Martinez.

18 min: Real Madrid win a corner which results after a botched clearance with Hazard shot from a tight angle that’s easily saved. Moments later quick-countering Arsenal generate another chance through Mkhitaryan after yet another mistake from the Spaniards at the back.

16 min: Jovic’s debut is a brief one as he exits in place of Varane.

13 min: Arsenal press the issue as Kolasianc cuts it back for Mkhitaryan, whose shot finds the woodwork. Real Madrid continue to look ragged in the back and we may be seeing an early switch from Zidane early on.

GOAL! Real Madrid 0-1 Arsenal (Lacazette, 10 min)

Lacazette stands over the penalty amid this wild start and his attempt hits the inside of the right post before caroming in off the left. Arsenal are ahead early. Strange days.

RED CARD AND PENALTY! (Nacho, 9 min)

Another terrible mistake from Real Madrid on the right side leads to a golden chance for Ozil and a Nacho handball off a Lacazette shot in the area leads to a red card in the first 10 minutes.

Updated

7 min: Another careless giveaway by Dani Carvajal in their final third and Willock gets a shot on target but Navas is there to make the save.

6 min: Arsenal win a foul from a dangerous area after a poor giveaway by Nacho and Ozil takes the free kick. His attempt is direct on goal and demands a save from Keylor Navas. Nacho is shown a yellow for his hard foul on Kolasinac.

Updated

3 min: Another dangerous moment for Real as Jovic finds space but a well timed tackled by Sokratis breaks up the chance.

Updated

2 min: First chance of the night as Karim Benzema comes inside and rips a shot off his left foot that’s well saved by Emiliano Martinez.

1 min: And we’re off! Arsenal attacking from left to right in their traditional home kits, Real Madrid from right to left in their all-blue away strips.

The players are coming out of the tunnel one team at a time. First it’s Arsenal led by the four officials then come Real Madrid, both flanked by pyrotechnics and smoke machines. Not a full house at the 82,000-seat FedExField, the largest venue on the NFL circuit until recently, with nearly all of the upper bowl empty along with most of the middle. Captians Ozil and Sergio Ramos meet at the halfway line for the toss and we should be under way momentarily.

The teams!

Hello and welcome to FedExField for tonight’s exo between Real Madrid and Arsenal. Two of European soccer’s most storied powers are spitting distance from America’s capital at the 82,000-seat home of Washington’s NFL team for a big-ticket pre-season friendly that represents their first meeting in any setting since a 2008 date in the Emirates Cup which the Gunners won 1-0.

Arsenal enter with three wins in three in their pre-season tour of the United States, fresh off Saturday’s 3-0 win over Fiorentina in Charlotte, while Real Madrid have dropped three straight dating back to last season: Saturday’s pre-season opener in Houston (3-1 to Bayern Munich) and a pair of May fixtures to close their La Liga slate (3-1 at Real Sociedad and 2-0 to Real Betis).

Kickoff is roughly 20 minutes from now on a humid 74F (23C) evening in Prince George’s County so let’s get right to the team sheets, where three of Zinedine Zidane’s new signings (Jovic, Mendy, Hazard) feature among the starters:
